My Instructor Car

Many learners will practice in the family car.  If they’re really lucky, they may even have a small car to practice in.  But with insurance costs so high for young drivers, they may well not buy a vehicle until after they’ve passed their test.  So learning in a “family car” makes sense.

The 207’s probably got the best all round vision and the highest safety rating in its class and has won the ‘car of the year’ award —and that makes the manoeuvres (reversing round corners, parallel parking etc. a synch.)  The door mirrors provide the best all round vision I’ve ever seen!  Furthermore, with a powerful 90bhp power plant, the engine is unstressed and less easy to stall.  (It’s actually more economical than the 1.4.)

As I also teach Advanced Driving, and deliver Company Fleet and Driver Improvement work, a Corsa, or any other ‘super-mini’, would be just too small and cramped.  The 207 is about the right size—and I don’t know about you, but if I’m going to sit in the back, I want my own door—hence I have the 5 door variant!

So: Why the 207?

Firstly, the 207 is actually only a few inches longer and wider than a Corsa —it just feels bigger, because it’s a bit taller.  The illusion comes from better use of the internal space and good design.  By comparison, similar sized cars (e.g. Astra and Focus) seem cramped — as I discovered when I was choosing my car.

As you’d expect, it has:

· Dual controls (of course)

· Air conditioning

· Multi adjustable driver’s seat

· Adjustable steering wheel

· Electric mirrors and windows

· 90 bhp 1.6l diesel engine (surprisingly powerful)

So, it doesn't matter what size you are, you’re sure to get a good comfortable seating position and drive from the 207.

Best of all, when you’ve driven the 207, because it feels bigger, you’ll be able to drive a much bigger car.  Or you might even want to go out and buy one yourself!
