Before you start …

Before you start your driving lessons you need to have a Provisional Driving Licence.  If you’ve not got one already, you’ll have to order a D1 Application form from the DVLA (clicking on the link will take you to the order form) or your local post office or by telephoning the DVLA direct on 0870 240 0009.  Alternatively, ask me to send you one!

You can start your driving lessons as soon as you have obtained your Provisional Driving Licence, but you cannot book the driving test until you have passed the theory test.  You should be able to book your theory test with a few days notice and you’ll get your result on the day.  The waiting time for a driving test is typically 4-8 weeks. Sooner dates are usually available through test appointment cancellations.

From the above, you can see how important it is to book your course in advance to ensure your desired lesson and test dates.   If you book a course, I’ll take care of the test booking process for you (your test fee — £62.00 from April 1st 2009) is included in the course cost and we don’t charge a mark-up.

Price: £820.00

Text Box: Yes! You can do it in a week!! 30 hrs (+ homework) - we take care of everything including test booking. This course usually starts on Sunday or Monday and finishes on Friday. It is ideal for those who are in a hurry and who could not otherwise find the time. If you want a test at the end of the course you would need to book the course and pass the theory test well in advance of the required start date (i.e. at least one month in advance). However, occasionally short notice driving tests can be arranged.

This course can be taken over a slightly longer period, say 2 or 3 weeks as a Semi –Intensive Pass Course to make life easier on your schedule. It’s a great way of passing quickly, but at a more comfortable pace.

Price: £572.00

Ideal for those who have already learned the basic control skills of driving.  20 hours in-car training, plus homework - as with all our intensive courses, we take care of everything including test booking.

For those who are nearing test standard and who just need a short burst of lessons prior to the test we have the Test Booster Course.  It is also ideal for those who have had an attempt at the test some time ago but haven’t had any lessons since.

Learning to drive, using the LD system , can be spread over several weeks and lessons can be booked individually or in a block at a discount.  Lessons are by the hour (in car) but unlike the courses above, the workbook and videos aren’t included — but can be purchased separately.  (And you can rent the videos / DVD’s from me) .  I strongly recommend double lessons.

How many lessons you need will depend upon your motivation and aptitude for driving, whether you have had any relevant past experience, and whether or not you can obtain any supplementary practice between lessons with a relative or friend. The above courses are therefore only a guide to what hours you might need based on the circumstances outlined.  It is not a guarantee that you will be ready for the test; this will depend on your individual progress.  Please be assured that I won’t put you up for you test unless I think you’ll pass; I don't want you to waste your money.

Why can’t we guarantee a pass?  The answer is simple: a minor driving error can turn into a serious one all too easily, depending on the circumstances at the time.  If that happens on your test, you would, unfortunately, not pass.  An instructor may well have a very high pass rate  - but no one can guarantee a pass.  Sorry!

The best way to learn to drive

The best way to learn to drive is to take regular lessons spread over a few weeks on a semi-intensive basis.  Pupils using the ‘‘one-lesson-a-week’’ approach often take many months to learn to drive. While this helps to spread out the cost you do end up paying more in the long run. This is because you often forget what you have learnt from one week to the next . You end up taking two steps forward and one step back.  Consequently, you take many more lessons to pass the test. If you are taking just one lesson a week, you would need to increase the hours you need to learn to drive by at least 50%. Therefore if on a semi-intensive basis you need 30 hours to learn to drive it is likely that you would need 45 hours on a one lesson per week basis. This is the real reason why so many driving instructors encourage their pupils to take just one lesson a week and avoid doing intensive or semi-intensive courses. However, the LD system does help to overcome this problem because you can use the LD materials to remind you of what you did during the last lesson while preparing for the next. The materials are also extremely useful if you are able to get any supplementary practice between lessons as they can be used to guide the relative or friend who supervises you. Again, this supplementary practice helps to overcome the problem of taking too long and paying more than you need as a consequence of only taking one lesson per week.

If you block-book lessons, we strongly recommend that you consider booking double lessons.  It will increase your rate of learning and reduce the overall number of lessons that you need and therefore minimise your personal costs.
