Company Drivers

Companies have a duty under the Health & Safety at Work Act to ensure their drivers are up to the mark.

The question for any Fleet Manager or Company Director to ask is: How good are our company car drivers?  Do you regulate the hours your employees may drive?  Are they “fit for purpose”?  I’m sure you record accidents but do you encourage ‘near miss’ reporting?

Consider the case of a driver who falls asleep at the wheel (a staggering one in four company drivers admit to this!) and the car gently leaves the road and crashes down an embankment coming to rest alongside a fence.  The recovery vehicle collects damaged vehicle and the Police don’t get involved.  All you have to deal with is the insurance claim ad the driver can dine out on the incident for a month or two.  That’s case 1.

Now consider Case 2.  It’s the same situation as above —but this time our vehicle is 100 yards further on and the car rolls down a railway embankment and comes to rest on the railway line in the path of an express train.  I’m sure you remember the case.  It’s EXACTLY the same accident,  But this time as it was your employee, your company suffers damage from all the adverse publicity and you may well find yourself defending a prosecution for corporate manslaughter.

Putting your company drivers through an Advanced Assessment can help you reduce your risk from “unfortunate accidents”.

Other benefits are:

- reduced insurance costs

- saved insurance excess payments

- less downtime of vehicles and people because the crashes didn't happen

How would your insurers reward you if ALL your drivers had passed an Advanced Assessment?

Whilst any ADI can “check out” their driving, what standard are they training to?  To best protect your business (and build on the experienced Drivers’ skills) your best option is to use an instructor who is also a RoSPA Diploma holder and a DSA Registered Fleet Driver Trainer.  I use exactly the same system of car control as Blue Light drivers.

Contrary to popular opinion, “Making Progress” isn’t about driving fast.  It’s about thinking about what we’re doing and maximising our safety space when we drive.

The Advanced Driver is ALWAYS in the right position on the road, travelling at the right speed with the correct gear engaged for the circumstances—and ALWAYS able to stop safely in the distance that can seen to be clear.

Call me, Tony Clarke, today and let’s see how we can reduce your level of risk!
